The Global Effects of Social Media

This week, social media proved to be once again, a powerful tool that can generate awareness and inspire action overnight, even on a global level.

A video posted on Monday from advocacy group, Invisible Children now has more than 55 million YouTube views and has inspired an international movement to bring justice to the people of Uganda. The video profiles war criminal Joseph Kony and the injustices he is charged with in Uganda, including child abduction and abuse.

Political affiliations aside, the powerful film made Invisible Children and its campaign to stop Kony famous overnight and brought the issue to the attention of people around the world.

Viewers were so inspired to share the video that it’s gotten the attention of national and international media outlets alike, including the TODAY Show and CNN and The Daily Telegraph. It’s even inspired celebrities to get involved. Rihanna, Oprah and P. Diddy, among several others, took to Twitter to express their outrage and passion over the video, using the #KONY2012 hashtag.

Only time will tell what’s next for the Kony 2012 campaign but you have to admit that it’s astounding and admirable how something as simple as a 30-minute video can unite a global community in less than a week.
